Festo to provide greentelligence through efficiency calculations

Festo AG can supply concrete and verifiable sample calculations for many applications, from body-in-white production through to food production, small parts assembly, electronics and process automation. This is greentelligence in the truest sense of the word.

For example, users can achieve savings of no less than 73% with vacuum handling units whose vacuum generators are controlled by air-saving circuits. The Festo vacuum generators OVEM and VADMI have been designed right from the start to incorporate these air-saving circuits and thus form part of Festo's portfolio of energy-efficient products and solutions.

Surprising results
Major savings of up to 32% can be achieved by reducing tubing lengths in small parts assembly and electronics operations, since in these applications, each time a pneumatic drive is actuated, the associated tubing needs to be pressurized and exhausted. Shortening the tubing between valves and cylinders by half produces this saving.

But even in cases where percentage energy savings are not in double digits, the efficiency gain in absolute terms can still amount to several thousand euros. The leading solution in this area is one which Festo specialists implemented in the wastewater treatment plant of the town of Sindelfingen. In wastewater treatment, correctly deployed pneumatics can increase the efficiency of electric drives. The gate valves offered by Festo reduce the energy requirements of the pumps, enabling savings of up to 11,300 euros a year.

It all depends on the application
In other cases, the principle is: "Energy efficiency in automation depends on the industrial application concerned," explains Dr. Axel-Andreas Gomeringer, Head of Innovation and Technology Management at Festo.

Any industrial application has its specific requirements with regard to technical criteria such as speed, load capacity, power to weight ratio, accuracy, control behaviour, torsional rigidity, efficiency or robustness and also economic criteria such as cost (purchase price, commissioning, installation) and operating costs (maintenance, service life, energy costs). Energy efficiency depends on the task at hand. "This task must be clearly defined before the user chooses a drive technology - electric or pneumatic or a combination of the two," explains Gomeringer.

Pneumatic and electric
A comparison between electric and pneumatic grippers shows how choosing the right solution depends on a clear definition of the task. If we consider the energy consumption during the gripping process, a pneumatic gripper will be superior to an electric gripper in applications involving long cycles and with just a small number of gripping operations.

A pneumatic gripper requires pressure only once to initiate continuous holding. No more pneumatic energy is required for the duration of the gripping operation. An electric gripper needs electricity for the entire duration of the gripping operation and can be more energy-efficient than a pneumatic gripper only if the application in question is composed of short cycles with many gripping operations.

Intelligent design
Engineering software helps in the dimensioning of systems. This allows components to be made smaller, avoiding an accumulation of safety factors. This saves effort and unnecessary costs in purchasing and operation.

The SOLIVIA 11 EU G4 TR with an output power of 11 kW offers new customer-friendly product features and allows high flexibility for the system configuration of photovoltaic installations.

ABB to win $250 million power orders in Saudi Arabia to expand grid capacity

ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has won orders worth more than $250 million from the Saudi Electricity Company (SEC), Saudi Arabia's national power transmission and distribution operator, to construct new substations and reinforce existing ones, to help address the growing demand for electricity. The orders were booked in the fourth quarter of 2011.

One of the new gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) substations will be located south-west of Al-Hassa in the eastern region. It will facilitate the transmission of an additional 2,000 megawatt (MW) of electricity from a new gas-fired power plant being built by an independent power producer adjacent to SEC's existing Qurayyah power station. Six other new distribution substations and the three to be upgraded will be located in the capital Riyadh and other cities in the central region.

"The substations will enhance transmission and distribution capacity to help meet the growing need for electricity," said Peter Leupp, head of ABB's Power Systems division. "They will also help enhance reliability and improve the efficiency of the regional grid."

ABB will design, supply, install and commission the new substations including the supply of key equipment such as GIS, transformers, shunt reactors and capacitor banks. ABB will also deliver a range of solutions including SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) as well as automation, control, protection and communication equipment compliant with the global IEC 61850 standard. This will enable remote monitoring and control of power assets located at multiple sites from SEC's power control center.

There seems to be a lot of excitement as of late about Green Energy Expo Korea (GEEK) which is the largest in Korea, Top 3 in Asia and Top 10 in the world. Korean global companies are scrambling to sign up for the space in Daegu fair.

PV industries are now facing a crisis as Korean companies are not an exception because the price of PV module has fallen sharply caused by economic recession from E.U. and U.S.A. However, lots of Korean major enterprises regard the situation as the opportunity and have participated in GEEK at EXCO, Daegu. For this reason, GEEK must undoubtedly turn itself into the best trade show related PV&Renewable Energy.

According to the Korea Photovoltaic Industry Association (KOPIA), as PV business activities become hard, companies make a decision that they will participate in the most reliable and largest one exhibition rather than participate in 3 or 4 subsidiary exhibitions in the past. It is actually reported that Samsung SDI(the core affiliate on PV industry of Samsung Group) made a platinum sponsorship contract for participation in only GEEK in Daegu, Korea. Packages with 44 PV modules are available from as little as 891 euros.

Calyxo also present their CX kits in the "Offers" area of their online shop. These are prefabricated photovoltaic systems suitable for use in almost any location conforming to a category 2 wind and snow load zone. All system components are perfectly matched to each other to ensure high solar yields.

Among other products, Calyxo also offers a solar carport with an installed module power of 2.8 kWp as a CX kit. The complete system consisting of the carport kit, CX3 modules and a transformerless inverter tailored to match the system is available for a total price of 5,990.00 euros + VAT. For this price the customer receives a permit-free solar carport with 2 parking spaces and 40 CX modules delivering a total power of 2.8 kWp. When installed at a location such as (e.g.) Ingolstadt, the system delivers a revenue of approx. 695 euros per annum, which represents an investment return of over 5 per cent.

In addition to the carport, the customer can also order a perfectly tailored and prefabricated system consisting of a Home Grid CX kit delivering a solar system power of 4.2 kWp and a Roof Top Parallel kit delivering 11.1 kWp. The Roof Top Parallel system is a complete package specially designed for flat roofs. This system highlights the advantages of the Calyxo CdTe thin-film technology.

The usual mounting frames required to provide an optimum solar irradiation angle are not necessary. This also allows the implementation of PV systems over large roof areas to provide a visually attractive homogeneous appearance. The Calyxo Home Grid CX kit is a complete package containing all the necessary components for implementing a 4.2-kWp photovoltaic system, which is sufficient to cover the needs of a 4-person household.

All Calyxo CX kits are commissioned and made ready for delivery within five days. The systems are perfectly tuned to match each other and are very easy and uncomplicated to install - especially because the base profiles are already trimmed to the correct length. The system layout and specification of the inverters is also predefined, which greatly simplifies and accelerates the planning process. The Calyxo CX kits can be used on buildings up to a maximum height of 25 m and at roof pitches of 3° to 60°.
